Overview of the DC Research Center

Relying on the superior scientific research strength of the Department of Electrical Engineering,Tsinghua University, the DC Research Center has established a research team with high-level academic research ability, forward-looking technical innovation capability, and practical industrial development skills. The core mission of the Research Center is to research and develop the key technologies and equipment for DC power transmission and distribution.

Key Directions:

DC Research Center focuses on the technical fields such as HVDC transmission, and MV/LV DC power distribution and supply. It also engages with theoretical research, technical research and engineering construction at the device, equipment and system levels.

Key Technologies:

a)IGCT

* Develop and research new-generation customized IGCT-Plus devices for the DC power grid to respond to the demand for application of the DC circuit breaker HV large-capacity transient interrupting and novel converter.

* Lead the world in multiple performance indicators, significantly reduce costs, and successfully adapt core devices to domestic settings.

b)DC circuit breaker

* First ever hybrid DC circuit breaker, created by combining coupled negative voltage and cross bridge valve group technologies.

* Successfully developed multiple series of 500kV/40kV/10kV/400V DC circuit breakers, and developed the first multi-port DC circuit breaker.

c)DC transformer

* First to develop the switched capacitor DC transformer scheme, which has the technical advantages of surge blocking, short-circuit current breaking, etc.

* Successfully developed 10kV/750V/380V DC transformers, and developed the first MW-class DC transformer single module based on IGCT-Plus.

d)Voltage source converter

* First ever compact MMC scheme, which has outstanding advantages such as high reliability, low cost and high density.

* First to develop the cross-clamp type MMC based on IGCT-Plus and a new type of MMC based on IGCT-Plus devices.

e)System-level analysis, design, control and protection

* Mastered the complete design technology, a multi-system and multi-means simulation analysis technology for flexible DC power transmission and distribution system..

* Mastered the compact control and protection technology of the DC power grid.

At present, DC Research Center has broken through many key technologies in the DC field, and the relevant achievements have been applied in Zhangbei DC grid project, Zhuhai "Internet plus" smart energy project, Dongguan DC distribution project, Nan'ao multi terminal flexible DC project and WDD UHVDC transmission project.
